Great Northern Loon – Gavia immer

5X7 Art Card Great Northern Loon image 1

Apparently what I grew up knowing as the Common Loon has now been renamed the Great Northern Loon (though Gavia immer remains its scientific name). A compromise, I believe, between Common Loon and the European name, Great Northern Diver. It sounds a little more important than a mere Common Loon, so I guess I’ll go with it.

I was reminded again how difficult feather down is to depict, as are reflections. I sometimes wonder why I torture myself so, but I was pleased with the result, so it was well worth it.

I took my first bike ride of the spring last week, and sure enough, the pussy willows were in bloom, and the mourning cloak butterflies were on the wing! Lost Moccasins Here is Sophie, a colored pencil commission I did this winter! A commission I had for Christmas--Ace the black lab puppy (in colored pencil, of course). I haven't done much for pet drawings, but I was pleased with Duchess here! (For a friend who raises Aussies) Runaway Sleigh is finished, framed, and on my wall in time for Christmas! Rosemaling the sleigh on my Christmas card drawing (but in colored pencil, not the traditional painting). It's roughly 20 minutes of work condensed into 60 seconds. I'm working on my Christmas card--a Scandinavian theme this year, complete with a yule goat, tomte, and runaway sleigh. Fall colors part 2!
