East of the Sun, West of the Moon

A girl searches east of the sun, west of the moon for a polar bear who is also a man, while trolls look on
East of the Sun, West of the Moon
2017

By the Troll Queen’s hand he became a bear,
One chance to regain his freedom—
When the human girl failed, who held his hope,
The troll took him to her kingdom.

But the girl who failed saw what she’d done,
And resolved to make it right;
From a land that lay east of the sun, west of the moon,
She would rescue the long-lost knight.

I love Beauty and the Beast, to which this story is similar, and the theme of learning to love that which the world considers unlovable, but this story—which shows the repenting of the wrongs one has done and then choosing to do the right thing no matter how hard—that is a story worth retelling again and again.
