Description
State butterfly/insect of Minnesota, Alabama, Idaho, Illinois, Texas, Vermont, and West Virginia, it’s hard to argue that the Monarch isn’t the most well-known and beloved butterfly across the United States, perhaps because of their extreme migration: all the way from southern Canada down to central Mexico—up to a 3,000-mile flight. Monarchs have become fewer and fewer in recent years, as milkweed, their sole larval food, is losing its habitat. However, I have discovered that along the Lake Wobegon bike trail, milkweed and monarchs are plentiful still. All summer long, it’s a rare walk without seeing monarchs fluttering along the trail.
