Wood Lily

2024
Sometimes a person has to wonder how a plant’s name came to be, while other times it’s obvious. In the peculiar case of Lilium philadephicum, the same plant is commonly known both as the Wood Lily and the Prairie Lily (after two rather opposite habitat types). It does, in fact, grow in both habitats. As the most widespread native lily of North America, it even grows in the mountains and on rocky outcroppings overlooking the Great Lakes. But there is no consensus on the common name—it seems to depend, primarily, on the habitat in which one lives. And in Minnesota, that could mean calling it either!
