Lady’s Slippers are often also referred to as Moccasin Flowers, a name befitting these shoe-like, native orchids. The shapes of the flowers varies from species to species, not unlike how the styles and artistry of moccasins changes from people group to people group. The pink and blue floral motif on this slipper is based on a pair of Dakota moccasins from Minnesota circa 1890, where the flowers are made from dyed porcupine quills.
