Western Meadowlark

Western Meadowlark ~ Sturnella neglecta
2018

The Western Meadowlark is among the most beloved birds in the west—sufficiently so that it has been named the state bird of six different states: North Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, Wyoming, and Oregon. It is second in popularity only to the Northern Cardinal, the state bird of seven states.

I have heard many mourn that they haven’t heard a meadowlark in ages; a meadowlark singing its heart out on a fence post used to be a common sight, but as prairie and pastures give way to development, the meadowlark’s song is silenced.
