Dala Gotland Sheep, or: a study in persistence

  • October 9, 2019August 5, 2021
  • by Rachael Koppendrayer

Sometimes an idea pans out beautifully from the moment pencil hits paper–and sometimes, even knowing exactly what one wants–it doesn’t.

To Run with Endurance
2014

I can often tell who is Swedish or grew up around Swedes versus who hasn’t–they either know right away that this is a Dala horse (or a Swedish horse), or they comment that it’s like a carousel horse. Which, I suppose, it kind of is–there are some superficial similarities, especially in my drawings, but they have a totally different origin.

Dala Pig: Duroc
2013

I took my first bike ride of the spring last week, and sure enough, the pussy willows were in bloom, and the mourning cloak butterflies were on the wing! Lost Moccasins Here is Sophie, a colored pencil commission I did this winter! A commission I had for Christmas--Ace the black lab puppy (in colored pencil, of course). I haven't done much for pet drawings, but I was pleased with Duchess here! (For a friend who raises Aussies) Runaway Sleigh is finished, framed, and on my wall in time for Christmas! Rosemaling the sleigh on my Christmas card drawing (but in colored pencil, not the traditional painting). It's roughly 20 minutes of work condensed into 60 seconds. I'm working on my Christmas card--a Scandinavian theme this year, complete with a yule goat, tomte, and runaway sleigh. Fall colors part 2!
